Lenten Quotes for Preaching and Reflection

Jesus didn’t just “come to die.” Jesus came to live—to teach, to heal, to tell stories, to turn over tables, to touch people who weren’t supposed to be touched and eat with people who weren’t supposed to be eaten with. To break bread, to pour wine, to wash feet, to face temptation, to tick off the authorities, to fulfill Scripture, to announce the start of a brand-new kingdom, to show us what that kingdom is like, to show us what God is like, to love his enemies to the point of death at their hand, and to beat death by rising from the grave.

—Mariann Edgar Budde, How We Learn to Be Brave: Decisive Moments in Life and Faith

An author turns a phrase and suddenly—we see.

That’s what I felt like when I read Jesus didn’t just “‘come to die.’ Jesus came to live.”

I mean, right?!

It’s such a staple of our culture that “Jesus came to die for your sins” and “Jesus died for you” that I haven’t objected with “Yes, but! Jesus came to live for you! Jesus still lives for you! Jesus will never stop living in you!”

I instantly envisioned a Lenten sermon series about what it means that Jesus died for us, followed by an Easter sermon about what it means that Jesus lives for us.

Roughly ten sermons from one quote.

That’s why I put together these collections.

Whether you apply them to your sermons, Christian education, newsletters, weekly services, or your personal prayer or journaling, these quotes are sure to bring enlightenment, awe, and gratitude.

Download your collection of Lenten quotes and you’ll also receive our weekly newsletter on topics directly pertinent to you and your preaching life.
